چکیده

Ju ly 20 0 8 je a n -f ra n co is P o d ev in on the very smallest scales—the voids in between the smallest known elementary particles—by quantum laws and possibly explain it in terms of some fundamental constituents. Superstring theory is often described as the leading candidate to fill this role, but it has not yet provided an answer to any of these pressing questions. Instead, following its own inner logic, it has uncovered ever more complex layers of new, exotic ingredients and relations among them, leading to a bewildering variety of possible outcomes. Over the past few years our collaboration has developed a promising alternative to this much traveled superhighway of theoretical physics. It follows a recipe that is almost embarrassingly simple: take a few very basic ingredients, assemH ow did space and time come about? How did they form the smooth fourdimensional emptiness that serves as a backdrop for our physical world? What do they look like at the very tiniest distances? Questions such as these lie at the outer boundary of modern science and are driving the search for a theory of quantum gravity—the long-sought unification of Einstein’s general theory of relativity with quantum theory. Relativity theory describes how space time on large scales can take on countless different shapes, producing what we perceive as the force of gravity. In contrast, quantum theory describes the laws of physics at atomic and subatomic scales, ignoring gravitational effects altogether. A theory of quantum gravity aims to describe the nature of space time KEY CONCEPTS

Mongrel Gravity

The various options for a quantum theory of gravity are canvassed. Worries about the consistency and physical plausibility of hybrid theories are laid to rest. These hybrid theories—mongrel gravity—comprise the only current, actual theories of gravity, and they also offer legitimate promise for discovering the full theory of gravity. These theories provide an interesting example of scientific r...

Quantization of Field Theories Generalizing Gravity-Yang-Mills Systems on the Cylinder

Pure gravity and gauge theories in two dimensions are shown to be special cases of a much more general class of field theories each of which is characterized by a Poisson structure on a finite dimensional target space. A general scheme for the quantization of these theories is formulated. Explicit examples are studied in some detail. In particular gravity and gauge theories with equivalent acti...

Extensions of 2d Gravity * †

Conformally invariant theories in two dimensions play an important role in the study of string theories, second order phase transitions and integrable systems. The Virasoro algebra and its extensions form the cornerstone of conformal field theories. More recently a lot of attention was devoted to the study of a particular class of conformal field theories: gravity in two dimensions. As I will s...

Quantum Histories and Quantum Gravity

This paper reviews the histories approach to quantum mechanics. This discussion is then applied to theories of quantum gravity. It is argued that some of the quantum histories must approximate (in a suitable sense) to classical histories, if the correct classical regime is to be recovered. This observation has significance for the formulation of new theories (such as quantum gravity theories) a...

Bilinear Functional Equations in 2D Quantum Gravity

The microscopic theories of quantum gravity related to integrable lattice models can be constructed as special deformations of pure gravity. Each such deformation is defined by a second order differential operator acting on the coupling constants. As a consequence, the theories with matter fields satisfy a set of constraints inherited from the integrable structure of pure gravity. In particular...

Extension of loop quantum gravity to f(R) theories.

The four-dimensional metric f(R) theories of gravity are cast into connection-dynamical formalism with real su(2) connections as configuration variables. Through this formalism, the classical metric f(R) theories are quantized by extending the loop quantization scheme of general relativity. Our results imply that the nonperturbative quantization procedure of loop quantum gravity is valid not on...
